Rescue of the “Phantom” crew
On February 15th the Swedish rescue service evacuated the crew of dry cargo ship “Phantom” flying the flag of Gibraltar. The captain of the vessel that experienced serious problems off the coast of Öland is Russian citizen Gennadiy Parinov. No members of the crew were hurt. All of them are currently accommodated at a hotel in Kalmar.
Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sweden, Igor Neverov, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Swedish side for the seamen’s rescue.
Piano concert and charity luncheon for the International Women’s Club hosted by Mrs. Elena Neverova at the Russian Embassy.
On November 15, 2011 Mrs. Elena Neverova, spouse of the Ambassador of Russia in Sweden, hosted a charity piano concert and luncheon organized jointly with the International Women’s Club of Stockholm (IWC).
The concert consisted of several pieces by Franz Liszt, whose 200th anniversary is being celebrated this year, performed by Pavel Raykerus, a young but already accomplished pianist from Saint-Petersburg, Russia.
Guests at the event included Marianne Bernadotte, Countess of Wisborg, Saila Quicklund, Member of Swedish Parliament, Eva-Sofi Ernstell, Director of the Army Museum, ambassadors’ spouses and members of the IWC.
All proceeds from the event will be spent on charitable causes by the IWC.
Opening of the Peredvizhniki exhibition at the National Museum of Sweden on September 28, 2011.
From September 29, 2011 to January 22, 2012 the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm is hosting a unique exhibition of the Russian group of artists known as the Peredvizhniki. The works, including several masterpieces, are provided on loan by the Tretiakov Gallery, Moscow, and the Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg.
The exhibition was inaugurated by His Excellency Igor Neverov, Ambassador of Russia in Sweden. Following is his speech at the opening ceremony

Inspection to Sochi
Experts from the International Olympic Committee have arrived in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi for assessing the city’s readiness for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The chief of the IOC coordinating panel Jean-Claude Killy gave high estimates of the progress made and approved the current level of cooperation with the Sochi-2014 committee.
Russian school in Gothenburg
Russian Embassy welcomes the opening of the Russian School in Gothenburg and expets that its work will create opportunities for more people to learn Russian in Sweden and in the long run contribute to better understanding between our peoples.

The conference of the Russian language teachers
On August 18, 2011 Russia's Ambassador to Sweden Igor Neverov greeted the Russian language teachers on the National Conference in Södertäjle. It was arranged by the Central Association of Russian language teachers of Sweden, National School Education Agency and the municipality of Södertälje under the support of the Russian World Fund.
The St.Petersburg Cello Ensemble concert
On June 16, 2011 a concert by the St.Petersburg Cello Ensemble took place at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sweden. The event was organized for the Embassy staff and for the members of the International Club of Stockholm. This Cello Ensemble is very well known not only in St.Petersburg but also far beyond, it was on tour in many countries of the world (Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Finland, France, Switzerland, Japan) and was a success everywhere. The public was charmed by the young musicians perfect skills and their flawless performance of the music by G.Haendel, M.Ravel, H.Villa-Lobos, V.Azarashvili, P.Tchaikovski, C.Saint-Saens, N.Rimsky-Korsakov, A.Khatschaturjan etc.
After the concert the guests continued to mingle during a cup of tea.
On the Day of Russia celebration in Stockholm
On June 9, 2011 a festive reception on occasion of the national holiday – the Day of Russia – took place at the Embassy of Russian Federation in Stockholm. The event was attended by more than 350 foreign guests and compatriots. Among them were the representatives of the Royal court, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden senior staff and other government agencies, military leadership, members of the Parliament, ambassadors and military attachès accredited in Stockholm, prominent cultural and art workers, representatives of business community. The Stockholms Police Orchestra (StockholmPolisens Musikkår) played the National Anthems of Sweden and Russia. The Ambassador of the Russian Federation H.E. Mr. Igor Neverov addressed the public with a greeting speech. During the celebration the guests were offered a whole number of traditional Russian meals and refreshments.
The III International contest named after S.Mikhalkov
All the authors which write in Russian are welcome to take part in the III International contest named after S.Mikhalkov for the best fiction for the teenagers.
Russian language contest
The great Russian poet A. Pushkin was born on June 6. The UN has officialy proclamed it as the International Russian Language Day.
In this light the Embassy and the Central Association of Russian Teachers of Sweden (CARTS) announce contest on prizes of Russia's Ambassador for children and young people learning Russian and their teachers.

Male choir “Optina Hermitage” in Sweden
On June 4, 2011 the male choir “Optina Hermitage” headed by its director Viktor Haprov visited Sweden. The Choir took part in a divine service conducted by the Russian and Ukrainian priests on the ruins of the St.Olof church in Sigtuna. In the ancient capital of Sweden one celebrated “Ingegerda’s day” – Swedish princess who got married to the Russian grand duke Yaroslav the Wise and who is revered by the Russian Orthodox church as the St. Ann from Novgorod. On June 5, 2011 there was also a divine service in the Russian Orthodox church parish in Stockholm on Södermalm.
On the annual meeting near the “Russian Stone”
On May 20, 2011 the staff of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sweden visited the “Russian Stone”. This almost traditional trip was dedicated to the Victory Day and 70 year anniversary since the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
After the flowers were laid at the monument and the Russian and Swedish National Anthems were sung the Embassy staff visited the Ernst Neizvestny’s museum (“The Tree of life”).
On the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Igor Neverovs visit to the Uppsala University
On May 18, 2011 the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sweden Igor Neverov and Cultural Attaché Alexander Popov visited the Uppsala University. The Ambassador paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor professor Anders Hallberg and visited the University main library Carolina Rediviva where the unique antique collection of the books and manuscripts were shown to him.
During the visit he also toured the Evolutionary biology centre and the Geological centre (Geocentrum) which are engaged in the most interesting projects based on the latest achievements of science and technique.
After that Igor Neverov took part in a seminar hosted by the Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies where he held a lecture on the Russian-Swedish contemporary relations, briefed the auditorium on the outcome of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putins recent visit to Stockholm and answered the questions regarding the discussed topics.
Visit of V.Putin to Sweden
On the 27th of April 2011 Prime Minister of the Russian Federation V.Putin held a working visit to the Kingdom of Sweden.
50th anniversary of Y.Gagarin's spaceflight
50 years ago, on the 12th of April, 1961, Yuri Gagarin made the first spaceflight. This event caused the pride and cheering all over the world. The heroic action of our countryman has been forever enshrined in the annals of mankind.
In memory of this remarkable date the various events took place in Europe, including Sweden. At 12 o'clock hundreds of balloons of the national colors of Russia and Sweden were released from Stockholm (Sergel's Square), Karlstad (Stortorget) and Falun, which symbolized that space is the common possession. On April 14, the commemorations will be held in Norrköping (organizer is the union Privet) and Malmö (Russia`s Honorary Consulate).
S.Hedström`s duties in the capacity of the Honorary Consul of Russia in Luleo are over
The Embassy of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Sweden expresses its gratitude to Svetlana Hedström for long-term honest and productive work in the capacity of the Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Luleo and informs that commencing April 7th, 2011 her official duties are over due to the change of place of permanent residence.
The procedure of appointing a new candidate to the vacant position is currently being finalized.
Vice Prime-Minister Sergey Ivanov’s working visit to Sweden
On March 29-30, 2011 the XV session of the Russian-Swedish Supervising Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation took place in Stockholm under the co-chairmanship of Sergey Ivanov and the Minister for Foreign Trade of Sweden Ewa Björling. Among issues for discussion on the agenda was participation of Sweden in the program of modernization of Russia, in particular in energy efficiency.
The Russian vice Prime-Minister proposed to brainstorm the issue of setting-up a Russian-Swedish Business Council that could become a platform for cooperation of leading companies and firms. In 2010 commodity turnover between our countries increased by 22,9 % and amounted to 6,44 Bln US dollars.
The Russian vice Prime-Minister also suggested that cooperation in environmental issues be established, in particular Russia could take part in recuperation of the Swedish population of wolves.
About the situation in Libya
Russian MFA urged to cease the indiscriminate use of force in Libya, as the result of which a heart clinic had been partly destroyed, 48 civilians were left dead and over 150 injured. Resolution 1973 of the UN Security Council provides actions only for the protection of civilians and should not be used for purposes clearly beyond the scope of its provisions.
The condolences to the people of Japan
Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan following the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country.
The President's message reads, in part:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the natural disaster that struck Japan, the powerful earthquake and tsunami that have claimed lives and caused widespread destruction.
Please pass on my sincere condolences to the victims’ families, and my words of support to all who were affected.
Russia is ready to provide any necessary assistance to Japan in the disaster relief effort.”
Russian Ambassador Igor S.Neverov has also conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to Japan`s Ambassador to Sweden Yoshiki Watanabe.
Maslenitsa at the Russian Embassy
On March 4, 2011 a festive ball-reception took place on occasion of the Russian Maslenitsa celebration at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sweden. This event was attended by over 200 foreign guests and countrymen: among them were heads of foreign Diplomatic Missions accredited in Stockholm, Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs staff, CEOs of large companies and business structures that co-operate with Russian partners, honoured culture and art workers, media representatives. The famous Stockholm Wind Ensemble conducted by Maria Eklund entertained the audience. An outstanding program of classic and dance music was presented to the guests attention. The concert was staged thanks to the kind sponsor support from the “Scania AB” company and the law office “Lindahl”.
Russian Maslenitsa (Butter Week) at Stockholm fashion
On Saturday, March 5 the Russian Maslenitsa was celebrated in Stockholm for the fourth time in a row. The festival was organized by the Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots in Sweden and supported by the Russian Embassy.
The visitors of the Medborgarplatsen got right to the center of the traditional Russian holiday with all its typical attributes: folk dances, songs, pancakes and tea from samovars. Young artists from Russia and local folk ensembles welcomed the guests.
Mascots of the Winter Olympics in Sochi
The leopard, polar bear and rabbit became mascots of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
Celebration of the Defender of the Fatherland Day in Stockholm
On February 22 a reception on occasion of the Defender of the Fatherland Day was hosted by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sweden. According to the good and long-standing tradition this event drew a lot of interest. The reception was attended by the foreign ambassadors and military attachés, accredited in Stockholm, representatives of the Swedish political establishment, heads of the compatriots organizations. Such the high-ranking guests as the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Per Westerberg, Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Defence Forces Sverker Göransson and the Mayor of Stockholm Sten Nordín were present.
Among the most honorable guests were the compatriots and veterans of the Defence Forces of the Soviet Union, participants of the Great Patriotic war (1941-1945).
Congratulations to the veterans on the Defender of the Fatherland Day
In connection with the Defender of the Fatherland Day the Russian Ambassador Igor Neverov and Military Attache Alexander Deriglazov sent congratulations to the WWII veterans living in Sweden.
A wreath-laying ceremony at the graves of Russian diplomats
On February 10, the Day of the Russian Diplomat, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sweden, Igor Neverov, accompanied by the Embassy staff visited the Stockholm Northern cemetery, where he laid wreaths on the graves of the Russian Empire’s ambassadors to Sweden, Jan Pieter van Suchtelen (1751-1836) and Grigoriy Okunev (1823-1883). At the same time, the representatives of the Embassy’s Consular Section honoured the memory of the last Consul General of pre-revolutionary Russia Theodor Brosset (1873-1953).
Russian Diplomat Day was celebrated at the Embassy School on the same day, where a lecture on the history of this holiday, the traditions of the Russian diplomatic service as well as Russian foreign policy and bilateral relations was held.
Concerning the meetings of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Russia, Vladimir Titov, with the leadership of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs
On February 9, 2011, consultations between the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Titov, and the first Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Frank Belfrage, took place in Stockholm. Mr.Titov also held a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Carl Bildt.
The two sides examined the present state and perspectives of Russian-Swedish relations. Both sides expressed their satisfaction at the positive development, good dynamics of trade, economic and investment co-operation. They also discussed the schedule of forthcoming contacts and events, including the session of the Russian-Swedish Observation Committee on trade and economic co-operation at the end of March. Both sides expressed their aspiration for interaction in different regional formats of co-operation in Northern Europe, including regarding the start of the Swedish two-year chairmanship of the Arctic Council in May this year. In addition, they discussed issues concerning Russia-EU relations and urgent matters on the European agenda.
