Embassy press-release

We consider the article published in the Swedish press (Dagens Industri, 16.04.2012) about attempts to seize real estate belonging to the Russian Embassy in Sweden to be biased. The heart of the matter is that this issue has to do with the Swedish state honouring its obligations to ensure immunity of foreign diplomatic missions in accordance with the requirements of international law. It was this crucial fact that was pointed out by Ambassador Igor Neverov in his letter to the head of the Enforcement Agency (Kronofogden).

This topic was brought to discussion during the Russian-Swedish Seminar that was held at the Russian Embassy on March 29 and gathered prominent experts in the field of international security, political scientists, diplomats and members of the Riksdag.
The Seminar was co-organized by the Swedish Atlantic Council think tank. The keynote speech by Academician Sergey Rogov, Director of the Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, titled “Europe and Russia: From the Legacy of the Cold War to Collective Security”, gave the general tone to the discussion.
The debate focused on the urgent tasks of forming a Euro-Atlantic security community and finding solutions to existing problems in the political-military and disarmament spheres, as well as on the problems related to confidence-building on the European continent.
Participants of the Seminar were interested to learn about Russian proposals regarding the elaboration of a European security treaty, a solution to the missile defense problem, measures related to conventional forces in Europe, as well as about the current U.S.-Russian dialogue in the political-military sphere. Press release of the Embassy of Russia to Sweden

The recent appeal by several Riksdag members to the Prime-minister of Sweden, Mr. Fredrik Reinfeldt, demanding consent of the European Union in imposing sanctions against Russian officials that are allegedly linked to the death of Hermitage Capital investment fund lawyer Sergey Magnitskiy, caused bewilderment in Russia.
We consider this initiative to be an unfriendly step against Russia, an attempt to interfere in internal affairs of another state and a disrespect of the concept of its Judiciary’s independence.
The aforementioned Swedish members of the Riksdag ought to be aware that the investigation of Sergey Magnitskiy’s death as well as the case of economic crimes of which he and several other persons are being accused, is still ongoing in Russia.
We expect that this politicized initiative, that has nothing to do with genuine concern about human rights, will not find support either with the full composition of the Riksdag or with the Swedish Government.
Russia is willing to continue the dialogue with its Swedish partners on humanitarian and human rights issues on a constructive and mutually respectful basis.
